Healthy Grab-and-Go Snack Packs

After a recent visit to the doctor, I was forced to realize something that I’ve known, but I haven’t wanted to accept. My weight is the highest it has ever been. Much of it has to do with my energy level, which has been non-existent lately. It looks like most of it is related to thyroid issues, which my doctor is helping me get under control. With this fresh start, I decided that I have to hold myself accountable and make smart choices when it comes to my diet.

Being a vegetarian, I tend to eat healthy. My biggest obstacle is portion size, especially with snacks. I tend to eat out of the bag or the package, and end up eating way too much. After thinking about how I can reduce the frequency of this unhealthy habit, I think I came up with a pretty good solution.

I realized that I needed something already pre-packaged. Something that I can just grab that is the perfect portion size.

I visited Trader Joe’s and Safeway this weekend and stocked up on healthy snacks.

Snack Pack Ingredients

Here’s the list:

  • Clif bars
  • peanuts
  • raisins
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • sunflower seeds
  • fruit sauce crushers
  • chocolate almond granola
  • almonds
  • peanut butter pretzels
  • cheddar Goldfish
  • instant oatmeal pouches
  • fruit cereal bars
  • mini rice cakes

I also purchased a key component: snack size bags.

snack sized bags

If you’ve never used these smaller bags, I highly recommend them. They are about half the size of sandwich bags, and are the perfect size for portioning snacks. You can enjoy the same great taste that you’re craving (for me it’s both salty and sweet) without going crazy with the amount you’re eating.

Some of the snacks already came pre-packaged, so the work was already done. For the other snacks, I filled the snack bags with a little of each ingredient. I got creative and mixed and matched some of the snacks. For example, one bag has a mix of peanuts and dried cranberries, while another bag has semi-sweet chocolate chips and raisins. I also filled the bags with different amounts. So if I decide that I want both cheddar goldfish and dried cranberries, I can have both without feeling guilty. I just filled the bag with half the amount of each so I could eat both.

Portioned snack bags

Once finished, I used two storage boxes that I already had to make grab and go snack packs.

Home and Office Snack Packs

One snack pack is for home and one is for my office. I figure I can keep it in one of my desk drawers. It will be out of sight, but I will have a variety of snacks within reach if I get a craving. I’ve been so busy at work lately that I haven’t been eating lunch, which is really bad. By the time I get home, I’m starving and tend to grab the first thing in sight, rather than planning a healthy dinner. I’m hoping my healthy snack pack with help with this bad habit.

I think this could also be great for parents who pack lunches for their kids. The kids can help mom or dad pick out the snacks and create the snack bags. When it’s time to pack lunch, children can open the snack pack and choose what they want to eat that day. They feel in control making their own choices, and parents can feel good knowing what their kids are eating is healthy.

This project took me a total of maybe two hours. I think it’s definitely time well spent. I have enough snacks to last me many weeks, and all I need to do is go to the snack pack when I’m getting a salty or sweet craving. All the work and decision making is done, and I’ll be eating food that is good for my waistline. A win-win.
